Heritage on the Edge

Every year April 18th is observed as World Heritage Day for spreading awareness about our rich cultural diversity and spreading the importance of preserving our ancient heritage. It also appeals to our younger generation to carry forward the legacy of the historic monuments and sites and protect them.

Our heritage provides clues to our past and how we evolved as a society. It helps us to study our history and enables us to develop an awareness about ourselves. It helps us understand and explain why we are the way we are. Heritage is a keystone of our culture, it informs, influences and inspires public debate and policy both directly and indirectly.

Preserving and protecting the past is essential for our future. This belief is at the core of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a global organization dedicated to the conservation of architectural and archaeological heritage.

Recently, climate demonstrations have shed a spotlight on the urgency of the climate crisis, which is having a catastrophic effect on our cultural monuments too. It is important to take action and we must act now to save this part of our human legacy.

That’s why Google Arts & Culture in collaboration with ICOMOS have launched Heritage on the Edge, a new online experience that stresses the gravity of the situation through the lens of five UNESCO World Heritage Sites where you can join and explore over 50 online exhibits, 3D

The effects of climate change on our cultural heritage mirrors a wider impact on our planet, and requires a robust and meaningful response.

Heritage on the Edge reminds us that all our cultural heritage, including these iconic World Heritage Sites are more than just tourist destinations. They are places of great international,

spiritual and cultural significance.
